Welcome to the start of something new!
Howzit! Welcome to business as unusual.
In the words of Lenin, “There are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happen.”
It’s safe to say we are experiencing the latter right now.
Within this tumultuous frame, thank you for taking the time and effort to support the first digital-only issue of TRAIL magazine.
I knew that changing the reading experience did risk losing you, but here you are!
Yes, there is pleasure in holding a print magazine in your hands, but I trust you find the digital reading experience a different kind of pleasure. I hope that you find this labour of love just as engaging and inspiring as before, but easier to read wherever you go.
While it is a risk for us, it’s a small price to pay for us to be as Earth-friendly as possible.
If there’s anything to be learned from COVID-19, it’s that we need to be ready for change, and do more with less. Thank you for being part of that leap forward by supporting digital.
We ran a survey in June to fine-tune the fonts and text sizes for the makeover. Nearly 90 of you offered your suggestions and feedback. Thank you! It helped, and you’ll hopefully see that.
But let’s not stop there. Please help us improve your reading experience for the next issue by doing our reader survey (exclusive to readers of TRAIL 36). To sweeten the request, our friends at First Ascent have a fantastic reward for two readers. To enter, be sure to get your digital-only copy of TRAIL 36 and use the link on the First Ascent competition page.
We look forward to your honest feedback.
For first-time purchasers, a common question is whether it is possible to share in-app purchases with other users. Both the Apple and Android app stores prevent this.
You can however view the app on multiple devices that are signed in with the same user account. So for example, if you have a phone as well as a tablet, you’ll be able to view the app on both the tablet and smartphone, provided you’re signed into both devices with the same user details.
If you purchase your TRAIL subscription on our site, you’ll login and read the mag through this web app. You will NOT be able to access your subscription through other platforms like Amazon, App Store, Google Play, Magzter, or Zinio.
There’s no connection between purchases on our website and those stores.
Until next time, stay vigilant, be safe, keep fit, and accept change for the good it will bring us!

Evolving with the times
It’s incredible how humans adapt. It’s bizarre to think of the reaction your past-self would have to your description of 2020 so far. And yet, here you are!
Resilient, adaptive, rolling within the limits of freedom, before returning triumphantly to your happy place. I’m proud of you.
And I am proud of us, Deon and myself. And the rest of the industry which has certainly not benefitted from the pandemic, lockdown, economic limitations, and all the other falling dominoes.
This magazine, as you’ll see, is very much a product of the time it was made. I hope that you’ll open it up again in a year or two, and shake your head with a smile at what you survived.
I’ve learned to love working from home, avoiding the commute. I’ve learned that I find social isolation much easier to bear than not being able to go for a walk around the block in the afternoon sun. I’ve discovered a meditative joy in pulling weeds out of the lawn as time whooshes by.
We haven’t all been so lucky to rise from the ashes. I’ve seen suicide, domestic violence, police brutality, and economic ruin. If you are reading this, you’re one of the lucky ones.
And knowing our community, I believe that you are grateful and that you will do your best to help if you know how.
Here’s to the helpers, the adventurers, the phoenixes, and all of you savvy digital readers. You make the world go round.
This issue is packed with superb content and I can’t wait for you to flip the pages…
